The latest addition to our Rare Vinyl Series is bound to cause great excitement amongst fans of British Jazz as it is a long-lost live recording by the great saxophone player Don Rendell.

Part Two of our Klooks Kleek series captures Rendell playing at this famous West London venue back in September 1963 with a line-up of Rendell (Tenor/Soprano), Kenny Baker (trumpet), Glenn Hughes (baritone), Johnny Mealing (piano), Chick Andrews (drums) and Lennie Williams (bass).

Two sets are lavishly spread over four sides of vinyl as the band patrol through some classic standards including Billy’s Bounce, Mean To Me and Gone With The Wind before a packed and appreciative audience.

“Rendell was on the cusp of forming his famous Quintet with Ian Carr at this time,” states Ian Shirley who pulled the strings to get this together, “but he had already matured as a player, absorbing the influence of John Coltrane into his own melodic and unique style. Basically, this is a cracking set recorded at a time when Rendell did not have a recording contract. ”

The music has been taken from lost tapes that have been fully restored and remastered so we can now enjoy hearing Rendell play off against Kenny Baker who was, lest we forget, one of the foremost trumpeters of his day as well as Hughes who was to tragically die young. Rendell fans will also recall that pianist Johnny Mealing was also in the original line-up of the Rendell-Carr Quintet…

As always, we have housed this 2-LP set in a specially designed gatefold sleeve complete with liner notes. The front cover is a previously unseen photo of Rendell taken by Dick Jordan live at Klooks Kleek that ices a beautiful cake.

We are only pressing 500 copies so get your order in today.
